At first, I didn't know what to make of you, you are one tough love kinda guy......but you are absolutely right and the way you put things shows how utterly ridiculous our thinking is. I LOVE the example of the plasma t.v. sneaking in and surprising someone in the middle of the night : Santa now leaves the bill, with high interest rates. My husband almost bust a gut laughing at that one.

We are in very good shape, doing exactly what you said : spending less than we earn and putting money in a brokerage acount. But boy am I tempted by "stuff"!

My parents, as immigrants did what you advocate with VERY little money. In fact, it took them 24 years to save $48K to put down on a house ( plus they paid for my college ). My father, one year not too long ago, earned $11k a year as a janitor ! They NEVER took their eye off the ball and now, they are retired, own their house outright and have significantly more savings than the 40% you talk about. All this with a 3rd grade education from a country that was led by a dictator. That is all they knew : never waste or spend all you bring in. Whether it is corn or money. And it has proven to be the only strategy they needed. It really is sooooo simple. You are so right.

I use you ( and my parents ) to keep me focused and in line. It is just so easy to lose our way and follow the herd. Thank you !!!!!

This isn't a question. I just wanted to say...I love you Larry! I've watched your show Big Spender and I've read your book Shut Up, Stop Whining and Get A Life. I just went out and bought You're Broke Because You Want to Be. I can't wait to get started. I'm going to give it to my younger sister when I get done.

I don't really need to read the book as my husband and I just finished paying off over $40,000 of consumer debt in 13 months. Stupid money decisions put us there, and smart money decisions got us out! I'm reading it because I want to keep learning and I want to stay on the right track.

We're now in the process of socking away big bucks for our retirement. We'll be living on about 40% of our income for the next several years. Thanks to people like you, we can do it very comfortably!

Thank you for all you do!

totally agree. people have their own ability, their own power to make choices. that is all that life is. choices. there are no wrong choices,, there is only choice, and the responsibility of it. the media shapes peoples minds. the media ( in total) has probably spent more money since the 60's, to understand how to make people FEEL a certain way, and linking THAT state to their particular product. so,,,,,, while sleepwalkers watch the hypnobox
( see TV ) they are inundated with thousands of messages to buy spend buy. simple.
make different choices, get different results. dont stop experimenting.

BUT, you cant change behavior till one first changes beliefs. change the beliefs, and the behavior will naturally change, as a by product. beliefs are powerful things. they influence. they are invisible. AND, as i see it, all of life, is either a belief, or a known. (whats the difference you may ask? ) the only way to know, to truely KNOW, is to experience. and everything else is just a belief.

in relation to money,,,,,,,,, people BUY things to make them feel better cause the self esteem is low. or its fun.

im also in total agreement with the 40% thing. right on mr winget.
also like the tag of rant and roll.
sincerely signed,

Thanks Larry.
It really is a tough call. I don't have to sell it. I have made it "work" for 7 years......however, it doesn't seem like it's worth it since I don't have the extra income I need to really maintain a house. If the water heater broke for example, there isn't any money to fix it. And then my visa gets bigger. I will make money off the house and I won't lose any by selling. My plan was to pay off the visa and put the remainder in a CD so it can sit and collect interest and I can't spend it. The housing market sucks but not too much where I live. In fact we're still seeing a profit even if stuff sits on the market a bit longer. Will I regret it in 5 years? Maybe. But then again, maybe not. But living paycheck to paycheck to just to be able to say "I'm a home owner" doesn't make sense to me any more. Am I being a fiscally responsible parent if I increase my debt to own the house? It doesn't feel like it. Luckily there's no one knocking at my door for the keys so I can take my time to decide.

LG........it's a tough call. Owning your own home is the American dream. But sometimes those dreams can become a nightmare. I always hate to see someone sell their house if they don't have to. But you say that financially it makes sense. Answer a couple of questions: Do you want to sell it? Are you doing all that you can so you don't have to? Will you make any money on the sale of the house? Will you lose money by selling it? In five years will you be sorry?

The housing markets sucks right now. Chances are you won't make any money and might even lose money. Don't do that if you can avoid it.

Hi Larry,
I read your book and I really like your take no prisoners aproach. After reading the book I am seriously considering selling my house. The reason being is that is takes up almost 50% of my monthly income to pay the mortgage (taxes/escrow are included in that). I have one credit card and the balance is high due to home repairs & no emergency fund & poor spending choices (and yes I take full responsibility for that). My car ($200 a month) will paid off within the next 6 months. I have a small savings account, a retirement fund, and a deferred comp. plan for retirement as well. I have great credit and no past due/unpaid bills. I am making cuts in the areas you suggested---I turned off the cable, I got rid of the bottle water etc. But I struggle with letting go of the house even though financially it makes sense to me. I am a single mom with one income currently (guess it's time for a second job). I feel like the house needs 2 adults with two incomes to run & maintain it. Do you think selling the house & renting - which could save me between $300-$400 monthly on shelter costs and more with utilities - makes sense? Everyone says owning a home is the way to go.

Great trash, Larry! So when does the new season for Big Spender begin? I check every week and am disappointed that even the reruns are not on. All of us fans at the Big Spender discussion board at A&E are anxiously awaiting.
